This is a living document. It will be updated every Sunday through July 19 with the week's results, standout players, and what to watch next. Last updated: June 12, 2026.

Week 1: The Tournament Opens (June 11-12)

The Opening Match: Mexico 2-0 South Africa

The 2026 FIFA World Cup opened at Estadio Azteca on June 11 with co-hosts Mexico facing South Africa in front of a raucous Mexico City crowd. The result was never seriously in doubt after Julian Quinones gave El Tri the lead just nine minutes in with the first goal of the tournament. Raul Jimenez doubled the advantage in the second half to seal a 2-0 victory.

The scoreline, however, tells only part of the story. The match was marred by three red cards, making it one of the most ill-tempered openers in World Cup history. South Africa's Themba Zwane was sent off after a VAR review for striking Roberto Alvarado. It was the first time a team had received two red cards in a single World Cup match since the Netherlands and Portugal each saw two in their infamous 2006 Battle of Nuremberg.

For Mexico, the opening night was nonetheless historic: their eighth time playing in a World Cup opener, and their first-ever victory in one, having previously lost five and drawn two.

South Korea 2-1 Czechia

Later on June 11 in Guadalajara, South Korea staged a comeback to defeat Czechia 2-1. Czech captain Ladislav Krejci headed home in the 59th minute to break the deadlock, but the lead lasted barely eight minutes. Hwang In-beom equalised in the 67th before setting up Oh Hyeon-gyu for the winner in the 80th minute.

It was a clinical turnaround from a South Korean side that looks well-organised and capable of progressing from Group A.

June 12: Canada and USA Take the Stage

Two of the three co-hosts make their tournament debuts on June 12. Canada face Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto (BMO Field, 3 PM ET), while the United States open against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles (9 PM ET) in what will be the biggest night of the tournament so far for American fans.

Results for June 12 matches will be added after the final whistles.

Early Storylines

The disciplinary tone. Three red cards in the opening match sets an aggressive early standard. Whether referees dial it back or maintain tight control will shape the tournament's character.

The co-host factor. Mexico's win was expected but still emotional. Canada and the USA both carry enormous pressure as co-hosts, and their opening results will set the narrative for the first week.

The 48-team format. This is the first World Cup with 48 teams and a new format featuring groups of four with the top two advancing to a 32-team knockout round. The expanded field means more matches, more upsets, and more stories. The group stage runs through June 27, and the volume of daily matches is unlike anything previous tournaments have delivered.

What to Watch: June 13-15

  • June 13: Brazil vs Morocco at MetLife Stadium (a blockbuster Group F opener), Haiti vs Scotland at Gillette Stadium, and Qatar vs Switzerland.
  • June 14: England's campaign begins. Plus Argentina, France, and Germany all enter the tournament across June 14-15.
  • June 15: Spain open their campaign. The marquee matchups start stacking up.
